That Place Between Sleeping and Awake

Last night I woke up about midnight in a sweat--the house was too hot and humid, and I had to go to the bathroom.

I lifted the covers to get out of bed, and I saw what I really hope was only a lingering dream image.

A giant spider, I'm talkin' the size of my hand, scurried away from me, from under the covers, across the mattress.

Drowsy beyond belief, I stumbled out of bed, rubbed my eyes, and shook out all the covers, whimpering at not being more alert.

I found no traces of my arachnid guest, and I suppose I'll never know if I dreamed it or not.

If it was a dream, it was more of a hallucination occurring after waking, which doesn't happen very often. I wonder what it could mean.

And if it was real...well, I just flat don't want to even think about it!

  1. Hi C.J.

Either way, you saw a large unattractive spider. Under the circumstances I would say that the omen was a warning. Stay alert. probably not too serious but significant nonetheless.

  2. NO THANK YOU to SPIDERS!! I may not be able to peruse your blog until that photo creeps all the way down and off of your page, lol.

  3. Hobo, that's kind of what I was thinking... Course it could also be because spiders are everywhere right now in town, and I'm seeing them on a daily basis.

Tammara, sorry, LOL. The picture only captures a fraction of my horror "seeing" the thing.

  4. Nothing is circumstantial, yeah there is a lot of spiders around but having one so close is a dangerous, fight back C.J.. Preemptive strike may be in order. Spring clean like your life depends on it.

Sorry that you were creep-ed out Tammara but you have a cool name. Some hippies and I were hitchhiking in pairs down around Kentucky (we were headed for Tyler, Texas). We would regroup in certain towns along the way. One pair told of waking up in a field of spiders after unknowingly bedding down among them in the dark the night before. Somehow no one was bitten but I contracted ring-worm from the boots that I traded my sneakers for back at the commune we had just left.

My friends made it to Texas but my partner and I joined up with The Royal American Shows after bumping into them in Little Rock, AK. I stayed with the carnival for eleven years but got rid of the ring-worm in the sea at Galveston Bay. I scrapped the sores with my buck knife until they bled and then soaked them in the salt water. I was cured after a few days of this treatment.

When it comes to spider bites... worms can be worse but fear of itself is worser. Jump off the chair and stomp on that mouse girls!

  5. You know, I've always been horrified of worms after dissecting a parasitic worm in my college biology class. At least spiders stay outside of you and don't go inward! Hobo, you are such a fountain of stories! I love it!

  7. Crazy stuff . . . I had a dream that a crab crawled up my bed . . . this was back in the 90's when I was like 8, though. L0L While I was working out yesterday, a decent-sized spider (though not nearly as big as the one you described) lowered itself down on a web in front of me . . . I didn't even see it until it was suspended on it's own string . . . it could've dropped down on my head before/during my push-ups! :-O

  8. Hahah! I think if I had seen a crab I probably would've shrieked. Something about those things are just creepy, maybe even creepier than spiders. Maybe it's the giant pincers. Spiders are really good about popping out of nowhere. I've had 'em do that string-from-above thing close to me too, the sneaky little guys.
